Just got this email regarding an article I published in December about America losing ground in supercomputing. In the print edition the article appeared under the headline, “Be afraid. Be very afraid.”
Hi. Your article in Dec. 5, 2011, is disturbing to me. “Be afraid. Be very afraid.” Why do you feel the need to breed unrest, fear and uncertainty in our country? I fear God, and nothing else. China, technology, communism, etc, etc… are all out of our hands. I believe that Americas biggest problem may just be journalists like yourself spreading the fear phenomenon, when there is truly NOTHING to be afraid of.

Well, the cutting of taxes leading to the shifting of the burden of education costs is something we can do something about. But that would make for a surly letter of a different kind.
I would have taken that headline as a rhetorical device. Aren’t headlines supposed to be hooks or something?
Why even print it?
Fear God? Is he kidding? Afraid of a mass hallucination? Let’s put him in the same room as an unchained Bengal tiger, Michelle Bachman or Gary Busey – he’ll really know what what fear is …
I read through your article and must admit that it is actually a very informative and educational read. Everything that you’ve mentioned is based on solid facts. Ok, the title could have been a little less scarier
but I did not feel at all that you were actually triggering fear psychosis. I enjoyed it (and you can forget about that letter).
