Politico reports that Dems are freaking out and fearing that Obama is toast. Money quote from a big Democratic fundraiser: “I’m so depressed. It’s happening again. It’s a nightmare.”
My sentiments exactly. How on earth did this happen?
Tagged: Obama

Sen Obama doesn’t play hockey very well.
1. Keep your head up.
2. Keep your stick on the ice.
3. No swanning.
Cheers
JMH
He looked his best when he didn’t have any competition.
Mc Cain is fighting a guerrilla because that’s what he knows best. It worked so far and the choice of Gov. Palin is a great move in the short term. It makes Sen. Obama look like the incumbent, it’s real magic.
But can it last? Mc Cain will have to live with this choice for two months; who knows what she’ll say or not say during that time?
When you scream “Change” and trot out a DC warhorse for VP, even the thickest members of the lumpen proletariat muse: “You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.”
As often happens, Dems think people vote with their heads, but Republicans seen to understand that popularity is most important. Bush vs Gore in 2000, Bush vs Kerry in 2004, Obama vs Clinton in 2008. In all cases, the smarter, better prepared candidate, the candidate who’s views and position on important issues most closely aligned with the electorate, lost to the more likeable candidate.
And that’s why they picked Sarah Palin. Just like George W Bush in 2000, she is clearly not prepared to be President (or even VP), but voters associate themselves with her. In 2000, everyone wanted to have a beer with Bush, now it’s coffee with Sarah.
How about being a responsible citizen in this context?
I’m sure it’s fun to write attention-grabbing headlines, and to track the page hit counts, but this topic domain is too important to be contributing to the already lamentable signal-to-noise ratio in election-related press/blog posts/etc.
Mitch Kapor has a timely and constructive tone in one of his recent blog posts (http://blog.kapor.com/?p=86): don’t panic, check the facts, and get involved.
You can create fun and provocative blog posts without further increasing information literacy entropy in this context — be a professional journalist, rather than a flame-fanning AdSense junkie.
I can’t get a grip on US Politics. As soon as the Dems have a bit of competition they just crumple? WTF is that about?!
Have some self-respect and some confidence for goodness sake.
“He looked his best when he didn’t have any competition” – right, you couldn’t call Bill and Hillary Clinton “competition,” could you? (Especially when you compare them to a septuagenarian and a fundamentalist.)
The problem isn’t Obama. The problem isn’t competition. The problem is voters. You get distracted from a capable, charismatic, and clever up-and-comer with experience in the Senate, by a purty huntin’ gal who loves her some JEE-zus and governs the most backwoods state in the Union – and governs it as cynically as the most grizzled politico.
History is presenting you with a golden opportunity on a silver platter, and you will fuck that up by asking for the Denny’s. And then you’ll stamp your feet and cry when Russia and China overtake you.
Peter O’Kelly:
Nicely said.
I enjoy Dan’s humor, but it doesn’t translate well into politics, and only subtracts from the dialogue.
@minicapt,
They don’t play hockey in Hawaii, so I wasn’t brought up with it. That’s okay though, I’m working with Pele on something big. Really big.

However you look at it this is very exciting. Palin was a very wise choice and moved McCain from way down to up to 5% up according to Galup. It is a depressing day if you are a Dem because McCain will likely win which will give Palin 4 years of experience to run as President when McCain is done. Could be a very long run for the Republicans.
Is there actually the sense that he’s losing momentum? Or is that just your standard blogosphere “expert” chatter immediately writing him off? Do you think his staunch supporters are going to vote Republican just because they think they’re going to lose?
And isn’t running around saying IT’S OVER! going to actually contribute to the sense at large that Obama’s not going to win? What if, by contrast, the response was “What a joke McCain’s pick is! Shows how poor he’d be as a President!” and the fight was kept up?
Also, just about all the scuttlebutt I’m hearing is the scandals that are swarming around Palin. She’s currently being investigated for abuse of power! She’s immediately being called to the task that she’s blatantly lying to people!
Maybe I’m in a bit of a bubble myself, but from my outside perspective on the American media, it SEEMS like a good amount of Americans are not with her.
(Also polls still show a race in full swing)
It seems that intelligence, eloquence, and honesty are just not qualities Americans want to see in their president.
@Michael Turro
Honesty in the President? What world have you lived in where people thought the politicians are honest? Obama is a politician like anyone else (I feel that way more and more every time I see him on TV, more and more he is just another one. Ever since I saw his photo-op at the bowling alley. Sigh).
If Americans wanted honesty they wouldn’t watch American News, but Americans can’t handle real news, real facts, real people. It’s a country so steeped in dishonesty that anything that is honest people will freak out.
The problem is that Obama wants to ’stick with the facts’ when the Republitards don’t care about facts, they care about winning.
Lipstick – out of context remarks – war hero – bridge to nowhere – all things that can be fought, if you want to fight like the opponent – dirty. Fighting fair won’t win against these guys, they don’t care about facts. Look at Kerry – swift boated right out of the campaign. What did Kerry do – “I’ll stick with the facts because the people know the difference.” And Kerry lost.
If Barry sticks with the facts and doesn’t fight like Rove, it’s over and he can go home now, saving millions of dollars.
@David “…fight like Rove…”
I’m not sure I want to see Obama bite the head off of a little puppy and spit it a gun enthusiast.
If he doesn’t – he better go home now.
Of course he can fire up the 527’s and get the Vietnam POW’s for truth out in force to show how wimpy McCain really was.
I’d love to hear this from Obama:
“Now you’re hearing from the Republicans ‘Service this, service that’ ‘War hero this and war hero that’ but I’d like to be honest with you all. John McCain is a pussy. Now don’t misconstrue this as an attack, I just find him to be quite sheepish. One time I went into his office at the Capitol and he was standing on his chair. I asked, ‘John, what’s wrong?’
‘There’s a spider in here, somewhere,’ he said in his 1800’s prospector’s voice and his exaggerated way of pronouncing words with s’s in them.”
Take it from the award-winning philosopher. Barry will regret his choice of VP in a few weeks. Just like he regretted a bunch of other things after the fact. If he does not act quickly and get the momentum rolling again, he will fare like “W”: poor advisor team will be his greatest “competition.”
Let’s look at the logic of winning the election. His VP won practically little to no popular votes. Hillary won 18 mil. votes. Now, if you want to win the election, would you work with the guy with no votes or with a girl with 18 mil. votes? I am talking winning here. Barry has turned what could have been a landslide victory for Dems into volksfest with “too close to call” situation. I don’t know about you, but I am a little tired of election which are run and won like the Olympics, when even 100th of a second (percentage) counts. This is just ridiculous. When you look at the current mess in politics, economy, foreign relations, education, … it is hard to understand where the momentum for Repubs is comign from. Unless crowds are irrational mobs of course. Only then, it makes perfect sense. Helped with poor choices of the opposing team.
@ Nietzsche: “…Unless crowds are irrational mobs of course”
All crowds are irrational mobs. It is the control of the mob logic that creates the winner in national politics. Since the mob thinks at about a 3rd grade level.
If you can’t appeal to the 3rd graders in the crowd, forget it.
Thinking that ‘the truth will set you free’ is great philosophy, it is lousy politics.
This goes out to Obama and the Saudis who paid for his education:
Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away.
Now it looks as though they’re here to stay.
Oh, I believe in yesterday.
Suddenly, I’m not half the man I used to be,
There’s a shadow hanging over me,
Oh, yesterday came suddenly.
Why they had to go
I don’t know they wouldn’t say.
I said something wrong,
Now I long for yesterday.
Yesterday, love was such an easy game to play.
Now I need a place to hide away.
Oh, I believe in yesterday.
Why they had to go
I don’t know they wouldn’t say.
I said something wrong,
Now I long for yesterday.
Yesterday, politics was such an easy game to play.
Now I need a place to hide away.
Oh, I believe in yesterday.
Mm mm mm mm mm mm mm.
Now would be a good time for us supporters of Bam Bam Obama to stop doing to him what the Clintons did to him during the primaries. As folks have said earlier in the thread, show a little self respect. Show more respect to the candidate what brung you to the dance. Dance with him. Looks who’s still ahead in the electoral vote column. Maybe read Gail Collins’ piece today: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/11/opinion/11collins.html?_r=1&ref=opinion&oref=slogin.
Twas 3 days before Christmas, 2012, and all through the White House, not a creature was stirring, they’d all long since been fired for blasphemy. Only President Palin sat alone in the large Oval Office, sitting at her desk pondering all the wonderful accomplishments over the past few years.
Old President McCain had long since passed away, he lasted barely 3 months into his administration before cancer finally overtook him. So much had changed since then in the United Theocracy of America. Her loving supporters cheered wildly as she appointed the nations newest members of the Supreme Court: James Dobson, Pat Buchanan and her own pastor from the Assembly of God church in Wasilla. It took only two weeks to overturn Roe vs. Wade with all 3 new justices, along with Alito, Scalia and Roberts united in it’s demise.
The filthy liberals cried out in protest, but to their own dismay, they learned that criticizing Palin’s policies was a one way ticket to the new privatized Halliburton built prisons, built on their behalf. This made the 2012 elections SO much easier she chuckled to herself, why hadn’t we thought of this before?
This also made it very easy to rewrite the Constitution to fit her agenda. No need for freedom of religion with only ONE state religion – Pentacostal Dominionism. All across the land one could hear the joyous sound of men and women “speaking in tongues”. Medicare was abolished, along with Social Security. Faith Healing took it’s place, and the stock markets had long since crashed and wiped out the privatized funds.
Why had the markets crashed? The only employment left were $2/hr positions (ha, minimum wage legislation was easy to defeat). A few CEOs were left to manage the corporations that had not already been sold to China. But since nobody could afford to buy anything beyond the basic essentials, the economy was deeply mired in a depression that made the 1930s look like “the good ol’ days”.
With a gallon of gas at $140/gallon, few could drive to work anyway. Who would have thought that “Operation Drill, Baby Drill” would take so long? And that so little oil remained within the US (well, the liberals and scientists knew this, but nobody paid them any attention – science had long since been banned). The belated President McCain, even before assuming his post, had voted against all forms of alternative energy and it was too late now to adopt it with energy prices so high. Nobody noticed that he had neglected to follow his campaign promises on this matter. “Drill baby drill” was the rallying cry!
All the offensive books had long sense been purged now that she had the power to do on a massive scale what she started as a mayor in Wasila. No More Harry Potter!, they all rejoiced. The United Theocracy’s population initially exploded due to strict laws that called for the execution of all those making less than $1,000,000/year that were convicted of aborting their unwanted pregnancies. However, with no gun control laws, and people starving and freezing to death across the nation, “survival of the fittest” weeded out all but the strongest and wealthiest.
The “Holy War on the Middle East” didn’t even require a draft, the choices were simple, starve or enlist and many chose to enlist. Only one thing remained to be done. Her church had taught her all her life that End Times would be a blessing to the whole world and that only Alaska would remain as a final refuge to the True Believers. And now it was time, 12/21/2012 at high noon. With a contented sigh she entered the codes into the system linked to the nation’s nuclear arsenal of 150,000 nuclear warheads. Proclaiming “Jesus come on back!”, she pressed the button and watched as thousands of missiles across the nation streaked into the air as her supporters cried “YEEEEEE HAAAAAA!!! That’ll teach em to mess with the good ol’ United Theocracy of America!!!”
Lehman @ $4.00. Need you ask ?
“her supporters cried “YEEEEEE HAAAAAA!!! ”

Poor Dems just don’t seem to realize that while it is easy to sell Socialism, the American people are smart enough to realize that there is a bill due for that sale.
Yes, we’d love universal health care… but we don’t want it to run like the DMV.
Yes, we want to soak the rich (evil bastards!), but, wait, we want to be them someday.
Yes, we think life ought to be fair and just, but we also realize that it cannot be and see clearly that anyone who thinks they can make it so is a fool or a tyrant.
Change, or the equivalent ‘down with The Man’ mantra, was the campaign of all the great villainous governments: Marx, Lenin, Stalin, Mao, PolPot, Borgia and hundreds more.
Watch the Saddleback debate sessions that Obama and McCain did: you will see one man who thinks he knows all the learned answers and another who has gotten his hands calloused answering the questions of real life. It is at that moment that Barack Obama lost this election.
Jeez, people, get a god damn grip. Did the Rethuglicans whine when McSame was down by 5%? Now the polls show that it’s a dead heat, with Obama’s lead cut down to *only* 50+ electoral college votes, and all the Dems are freaking out and crying in their blankets. Sorry to offend your sensibilities, ladies, but politics is war. Circle the wagons, and fight back HARD!
Stop panicking, it’s ridiculous.
Check out Iowa Electronic Markets, where Barry is still heavily favored to win.

“Sorry to offend your sensibilities, ladies, but politics is war. Circle the wagons, and fight back HARD!”
Sorry pal, when it comes to fighting McCain’s got you beat.
“Now, I want you to remember that no bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country. Men, all this stuff you’ve heard about America not wanting to fight, wanting to stay out of the war, is a lot of horse dung. Americans traditionally love to fight. All real Americans love the sting of battle. When you were kids, you all admired the champion marble shooter, the fastest runner, the big league ball player, the toughest boxer. Americans love a winner and will not tolerate a loser. Americans play to win all the time. I wouldn’t give a hoot in hell for a man who lost and laughed. That’s why Americans have never lost and will never lose a war. Because the very thought of losing is hateful to Americans.”
from “Patton” opening address to the troops.
Hillary is a better fighter than Obama, that’s why we fear her so much. ‘Bama had his chance, he chose “fake face” and the rest is history.
Start countin’ those chads…you’re gonna need’m.
It was a nice dream while it lasted.
re: about:internets little bedtime story … McCain won’t be able to take the oath of office. On Jan3rd, a lawsuit will be entered on Palin’s behalf to contest McCain’s natural-born citizenship qualification. Technically, he’s a citizen like Gov. Ah-nuld, but doesn’t qualify to be president, unless someone rewrites the constitution real quick. Palin will win and take the oath of office and as a sign of partisanship, will offer the Vice Presidency to Hillary. The Senate will rubber stamp that choice pronto.
I’m emigrating.
Good-bye.
Looking over the fence, I’d say part of the problem is that you picked a guy who has never authored any significant piece of legislation, votes “present” on important bills, when he’s not on a teleprompter he makes “W” sound articulate, and has made a collection of questionable political associations over the years. Just not the best product to market.
Like it or not, Palin has way more practical experience to govern this country than Obama does.
Bottom line, I think the big problem is that “win at any cost” has become the central value of the Democrats. It’s alienating voters. Remember that as bad as Bush is portrayed, he’s got a much better approval rating than the Democrat-majority Congress. Get back to your core values and make winning secondary — ironically, you’ll stand a much better chance that way.
How to tell when the cracks appeared?
Got any other no-name “news” sources? Cracked.com? The Onion perhaps?
Hack. COUGH COUGH! Hack!
@JOHNC – Right on!
@Lastangelman
It is YOU I wrote my books about. This little, gruffy, insignificant wannabe without will to power. You are emigrating? To where? Kazakhstan? Or Liechtenstein? When you cross the border, look closely at your passport. Don’t give it up.
“Barry, we hardly knew ye”?? Never thought I’d defend John Kennedy. But this misty-eyed romanticization of Obama has got to stop. Just exactly how is Obama like Kennedy? As in Kennedy actually fighting in WW2 as opposed to Obama recently claiming he “thought of” enlisting?
There’s little difference between the two parties as far as I’m concerned:
Obama thinks I’m rich (even though I live in a 900 sqft apartment) and wants to raise my taxes when I’m already paying almost 50% of my income to government.
McCain wants to raise my taxes too, just not as much.
BOTH should focus on cutting government spending, especially through the earmark process, and reducing the costly inefficiencies that burden our society. Everything else will fall into place nicely after that.
I’d like to see a real change candidate like Perot in this race. But I’d settle for Ron Paul.
Obama is intelligent and charismatic, and gosh darn it, I like him.
But not for president.
Obama for change? That would be honest if he were talking about changing his mind.
Can you just imagine the swearing in ceremony with Rev. Wright asking “Do you swear to uphold the constitution of these GODDAMNED United States of America?”
Not something I want to see. Ever.
As for McCain, no president is, was, or ever will be perfect, but this man’s got a set on him and chose a running mate that has her own set. I like her.
Anyone; but particularly a woman, who can rise from PTA-Hockey mom to Governor by the age of 44 while raising five kids has got something on the ball.
@iKeane
Donald Trump for VP would have been a far better choice. He knows his stuff and he’s got an airplane. and a tv show.
hockey mom to governor is nice, but let’s get some perspective here. She has no urban experience and last thing we need is backwoods experience in the WH. We tried that with “W”. We need someone who knows how to walk on asphalt.
Far more interesting is that people with real ability (think me and Donald Trump) avoid politics like a plague.
@Thisson
We really need a third party to vote for, to balance out the designer-politics. It would also be nice if the winning party had to win at least 60% (maybe even 70%) of total (combined) votes to govern. That would force politicians to work together instead of doing this smackfest about lipstick and moose shootin’.
Nietzster – Like the VP choice, indeed “The Donald” would have been fun !
Seriously, Being and Nothingness is overrated and almost impossible to read. I would posit that backwoods experience is something that we haven’t really had since Andrew Jackson and that it might do us a whole lot of good!
“w” is no more a jolly rancher, than well jolly rancher cherry is really cherry !
Asphalt is nice to walk on though, but water is better, especially water within an “urban” (code word) context.
Obama used to walk on water, just ask him or better yet for an “urban” experience ask Oprah!!! (3x’s wow)
Palin can shoot a moose and then dress it (this is hard to do even with a moose that hasn’t been angered) so I’m guessing see might be more than capable of handling those Congress critters.
Kant is Votin’ for the …can you guess ?
Kant, my friend, we finally transcend the boundaries of time and space. Good to see you here. Why do you mention Sartre’s essay my friend?
Your criticism of pure reason fell in the water the repubs are walking on. It sank like leonardo di caprio in that movie about staring at the abyss and abyss staring back at ya.
Trump is the only guy we know who could get stuff done. He could deal with Russians, with middleeaster(ner)s, midwesterners, crooked warlords. And you’d know how he is doing: if things are going well, he’d be building a condo building someplace with his counterparts. I mean, dude has this animal magnetism for money and get’er-done.
Next time I come here, I may conference in Schopenhauer. Be ready.

No need to conference me in. I am online and will chime in as Will requires Representation.
Schoppi, good to hear from ya. These time worm holes really do work, thanks to the LHC experiment over in der Schweiz.
As an intro to readers here, a bit about Shoppi’s:
“Schopenhauer’s starting point was Kant’s division of the universe into the phenomenal and the noumenal, that which can be perceived and that which can only be thought. Schopenhauer extended Kant’s ideas, in his opinion, to gain greater understanding of the noumenal. For instance, he suggested that noumenal reality was singular because multiplicity was part of phenomenal experience. Some commentators suggest that Schopenhauer claimed that the noumenon, or thing–in–itself, was the same as that in us which we call Will. ”
We do need phenomenal, and we do need the will to do it. Be ready and vote accordingly.
A key aspect of my thought is the investigation of what makes man less than reasonable. Neither candidate has a clue what it means to think about that, let alone act upon it.
Obama is a nice young fella, shiny and clean. A little odd looking maybe, sort of like an over-tanned Alfred E. Neuman.
But when it comes right down to it, Sarah Palin shits bigger than him every morning.
The ultimate aim of all love affairs … is more important than all other aims in man’s life; and therefore it is quite worthy of the profound seriousness with which everyone pursues it. What is decided by it is nothing less than the composition of the next generation …
Nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public.

Barack should appear in some Apple commercials. That’ll get him more popular.
“The problem isn’t Obama. The problem isn’t competition. The problem is voters.”
This is really indicative of why the Democrats slipped last 2 elections and why they’re slipping again.
Learn to stop blaming the customer.
Just ignore Palin. If publicity was all that mattered, Paris Hilton would be President. Just tell everyone why Obama has the best policy.
Obama’s biggest mistake is Joe Biden. It took him from being the candidate of change to being the candidate of the old school Washington. Had he chosen a woman….any woman, not necessarily Hilldabeast, he would have locked McCain out of choosing a woman. Brilliant choice by McCain. Poor choice by Obama.
Jebus, you guys, the fuckin election is 54 days away. TWO FUCKIN MONTHS.
Does Barry seem freaked out?? No. Mister cool as a cucumber is plotting away the demise “raisin mccain”.
Also read this.
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/11/opinion/11collins.html
And take a deep breath and relax.
What crap. So now you’re part of the pack of pundits that haven’t had a thing right in this entire election. Hillary was a lock. Giuliani was a lock. Romney was a lock. Unless Thompson came into the race and overpowered everyone with his Reaganesque charm. McCain was deader than Dillinger. What utter crap.
Obama is going to win. Big. You read it here first. But you’re not the one who wrote it.
@ Charlotte: 2000 was partly Gore’s, but mostly the Supreme Court’s fault. 2004 was Kerry’s for letting himself get Swiftboated. (Whether you believed the Swift Boat stories or not, you don’t want to elect a wuss.)
Today however the race should already be very one-sided. The only reason it isn’t, is the credulity of the voters. I’m sorry but the “customers” are just as accountable as anyone else. They’re the ones who do the voting.
Folks – it’s really easy:
Barry is a politician – not Jesus – not Jimmy Carter (who was a governor!). He was able to hide that fact for 18 months. His choice of an old, white guy totally vaporized any thought of his decision-making process being new, or different underscores that “inside the beltway” image.
He’s a well dressed, good looking, gifted orator who has a voting record just to the left of Lenin.
Folks may hate Bush, but that doesn’t mean they’ll vote liberal if they’re conservative.
The Democrats haven’t gotten 50% of the vote since 1944. Fly-over country votes conservative.
As for Biden vs Hillary as VP? It would make the race more interesting (due to the Clinton’s making him watch over his shoulder for his health). Think Hillary was a ‘change agent?”
Here’s a joke for you:
“What’s the difference between Barry and Hillary?
Lipstick.”
By the time the debates are over, and folks hunker down to decide, it’s really simple:
Folks will vote more conservative than liberal.
The Republicans will have defined Barry as liberal, and a typical politician.
And the silent majority of racially biased folks who smile & chat with minorities during the day will vote against one when the voting booth curtain gets drawn.
Unless a real conservative minority candidate gets nominated (along with the ever-present old White Guy as a VP), there’s a better chance that I will be named Steve Jobs’s successor at Apple than a minority candidate will be elected president.
Sorry folks. Old habits are VERY hard to break.
And what’s worse? Y’all know this to be true, but no one has said as much in 18 months.
that’s why the democrats are the “fret” – party!
y’all thought you were so smart by dissing the only candidate that *could* beat McCain and thinking this thing was a cakewalk. Well… Democrats, it has been shown, like to nominate losers. Taping all of your hopes to a “change” candidate who is a career politician, but just at the beginning of his career, was a flimsy way to build this particular spaceship. Wrapping an old white dude senator around it doesn’t fix the fact that the thing was never air-tight and that it would take a miracle for the thing to reach orbit in the first place. We’ll see. I think the DNC and blogs (such as yours) pushed this election in a bad direction for the Dems, but I’m pulling for them.
Palin Derangement Syndrome (PDS) among the chattering classes is a beautiful thing to see. I envy you Real Dan — working at Newsweek, EVERYbody you see at work is (of course) a Democrat, and they’re shitting bricks. Oh but I’m sure that won’t affect their journalistic objectivity, not at all.
By the way, I can’t wait to watch the Clintons undermine Obama in this election cycle. For those of you too dumb to figure it out, Hillary Clinton’s best hope to become president in 4 years is for Obama to lose the general election this year, thus joining all general election losers in the ash heap of history.
danny boy, relax gawd-damnit.
it’s two months to go, and many undecideds still out there. do not be swayed by the fact that the repubs found themselves someone to swing all the “i-want-a-hot-religious-right-gun-totin’-MILF” votes out there.
look, you’re so big on listening to whatever the new york times opines, then read this one from today.
now take a deep breath and just relax, for god’s sake. have a martini. sheezus, yer makin’ me dizzy, fer crissake.
I think Obama is to good for the U.S. and Bush is exactly the kind of president they deserve and so are mc Cain and Palin. Palin is a idiotic hypocritical conservative religious zealot like Bush and most Americans are like that. I think mc Cains economic policies are what the U.S. needs. A bankrupt U.S is good for the rest of the world.
@grrr:
You wrote “A bankrupt U.S is good for the rest of the world.”
Let me clarify something for you. World economy hinges on US economy. Without US economy, world would go back to the Middle Ages (financially, anyway).
Unless, of course, you can qualify your own statement.
Fact is, regardless of who is elected President, US will do very well in the mid-term. A lot of banana-countries got carried away in the global boom. Don’t bite the hand that feeds ya.
@ samg
Have you ever been in the u.s.? If so you know that it is in reality a rather poor looking country bad roads ugly buildings real poor looking people. I think the economic numbers you are seeing are probably just lies.
@grrr: Am I hearing “Go Chavez” from your post? You sound a bit bitter (grrr?). Somebody pi$$ed in your coffee as you were leaving the country for good?
Poor looking people? That’s called “casual day” in the US my friend. Relax. We start pulling out the tuxedos around turkey-day.
@samg
No it has nothing to do with politics and even less with Chavez from a northern European perspective the U.S will look very poor and ugly that is just a fact.
grrr…while looking at the U.S. from a Northern European perspective, it might be wise to remember that if it were not for the U.S. and all of her poor, ugly people, folks like you would be living with “Mein Kampf” as your bill of rights.
@grrr: I just happen to be a European (although from somewhat more moderate latitudes, the MittelEuropa). Poor is a very relative term. If you say “poor” and expect The State and The Leader to provide for everybody, then you will find people here who are poor because they are not taking advantage of opportunities.
On the other hand, this is a perfect place for me. Primed by years of European bullshit politics and social experiments, I am enjoying the unlimited opportunity and relaxed social atmosphere. Even during these tough economic times, the massive economy of US of A offers plenty of opportunities for those who are ready to jump on them. Should the state do more for the poor? Yes. Should poor do more for themselves. Yes. Should education be free? No. Education has nothing to do with money but has everything to do with getting your ass out of bed and enrolling into some courses in the evening (or during the day, depending on your schedule).
So, I am not buying your claim about poverty and the poor. Yes, there are rednecks, hickies, punks and whatever. But there is also the iPod crowd to improve the average hahaha
It is also pointless to compare Europe and USA. In recent years, European environment has gotten much worse (more expensive to live in, safety has declined, economic opportunity was shifty). Historically, tectonic social and economic changes in Europe have always resulted in some fireworks. We had the preview of what could happen in France (social unrests/immigration issues/whatever) not too long ago.
I love the Dems here, politically and non-sexually, but my politikking is somewhere in the middle. I want the State out of my hair 99.9% of the time but I also want the system that will offer similar if not same opportunity for education and personal development for everyone. Note that this depends as much on the state as on the individuals bitching about it. if you don’t get your ass out of bed, no educational program is going to help you.
Love the Northern Europe. Too cold for me. Love the USA and its varied climate zones. Not so much during hurricanes.
You know Danny-boy, I don’t think you’re understanding the context of the picture. It’s supposed to be that I’m sad while looking at the tracks. Why sad? David didn’t tell me why, he just said “B, stare here and look sad.” But it’s all for some upcoming commercial where I promise the people in the background…
Yes, this picture was taken before a small speech. Snap, then I walked across the tracks to the people and began talking of my plan, my master plan, where part of it is to make the trains run on time.

@FBO: After watching the news at CNN, I wish you had that speech in LA. Not only is this train tragedy a people tragedy, but it is also a tragedy for public transportation (you know, the foreign oil thingy). State-run anything will kill you eventually. It’s the way it is designed.
My thoughts are with the families of the victims.
@Kant: I forgot to note that a moose shootin woman has no place in the White House. A woman with the shootin problem should stay in the sticks. We understand the urge, but the asphalt may scare her and then she will get the guns.
Her papa (McCain) is also a shootin dude. I have great respect for the man and he would be a great Pentagon chief. A pres must have a clear head, and a brain without injuries of any kind (PTSD included). Repubs have fucked up the image and influence of the USA beyond recognition (total FUBAR). It will take a genius to fix this one. Repubs dont have a genius on the ballot, just the two corporate/moose-shootin pupets. That woman, bless her heart, probably wants milder winters for her family too.
I almost forgot: a woman who can kill and skin a moose can replace the Queen as the Head of State in Canada. Why should Palin settle for some shitty veepee job. Go for the Queen girl! (or her Representative’s seat) up North. They got oil too, so drillin and shootin comes in handy. Naturally.
@ SamG
“The State and The Leader to provide for everybody, then you will find people here who are poor because they are not taking advantage of opportunities.”
Like the sick or the elderly? Why is such a selfish society good? My brother lives there so I know how it is and I see it is not working . People act more afraid in the U.S (that is probably also the reason for all the religion ) and the quality of live is bad for such a supposedly rich country. I think you misread the current climate in Europe the Governments left and right and the EU where moving to a more cynical U.S. like society and it is that what you call “In recent years, European environment has gotten much worse”
Press release to be handed out today regarding my sympathy and deep sadness over the recent railroad tragedy.
- Barry
grrr: European Union is a waltz party between France and Germany. That’s how it was defined in 1961. It was sold as an economic union and now it has grown into a powerless political union (look at Georgia example for reference). Without the US, EU has little teeth – politically and economically.
Frankly, it is difficult to justify animosity towards US. You may not like our government (elections, anyone)? but you should not generalize. EU sells itself as a perfect project. It is not. If it was, its influence (positive influence) in the world would be much more visible.
Palin is a liar and a panderer…
Not my kind of woman for vice president, nor president, for that matter.
Anyone who considers her a viable candidate to run this country if something happens to McCain if he, heaven forbid, becomes the next president is a total fool.
Apparently most Americans are fools. They choose a candidate by appearance only.
I am an American woman. I’m voting for Obama.
May the best (wo)man win.
Right now the media is caught up in the swoon of Palinitis, which will start to make them cramp uncontrollable and shift the narrative back to Obama’s camp once the major news media finally starts releasing LIKELY VOTER polls again and we get bored of Palin, and/or she gets caught on something that gets traction and runs her into the ground.
Whats been happening, and with due credit to the GOP, is that the Republicans have pretty much dominated the news cycle and drowned people out. Theyve done brilliant work in wresting this coveted peice of property from Obama’s grasp and as a result he’s slipping. It’s also not helping that the polls which were originally reporting Likely Voters that showed a huge spread between Obama and McCain were shifted to Registered Voter polls and the 10+ point margin that actually exists is now covering up the huge surge in voter registration that the Democrats have.
There were stories being run that because the “polls” were down that fundraising would also be down for Obama and what happens? Dude raises $66M, having yet another record month. September should be lower, but honestly I think Team Obama steps up and starts sending in their General checks because they are a little skittish over the recent news cycle.
Whats happening is basically the media is basically making there be a competition where there was none. Why? It sells papers. More people are consuming news then ever before. If they could postpone the election another 4 years just to keep covering Palin and Obama, they probably would.
When the decision comes down to the wire, peoples houses are being foreclosed on and the economy is so bad it makes the Great Depression look like the first Dot Com Boom in contrast, it will be very easy to say “There needs to be change.”
If theres one thing Barack has done that will save his proverbial ass from the fires of Hell is hes done one outstanding job of branding himself this campaign. In the end, people will associate true change with Barack Obama, and all those “likely voters” whos pollin all of a sudden doesnt matter (even though voter registration is at an all time, newsworthy in itself) will be the ones electing the next President of the United States.
You ought to be ashamed of yourself. I didn’t take you for a Good Time Charlie. So we got a little distracted by a pretty face? Look at today’s headlines, man! THIS is why we need to keep McBush out of the White House. Or are you just another Millionaire for McCain?

Hi webmaster!
Let’s have a debate. Fake Barack vs. Fake John anyone?
It was delightful to see Bill and Steve sharing a stage and reminiscing about their stuff, but I was surprised that Bill (gadgets) and Steve (widgets) didn’t settle the debate about the original inventor of the widget.
One can never have too many widgets. Somebody codes something you never even dreamed of wanting – suddenly everybody
