More Dan: Fake Steve

My TalkingHeadTV.com interview

Filed: Tech

In case you’re wondering what really happened to the Fake Steve blog and why I shut it down, you can check out the videos posted on TalkingHeadTV.com. Special bonus is they also have a video interview with my very good friend Veronica Belmont. Worth a look.

Would be nice if the voice was synched with the visual. I feel like I just watched a bad Godzilla dub.

Really great stuff, bg’s comment is real nit picking. Great videos. I was impressed that Real Dan seems genuinely concerned about Real Steve’s health. On this blog of sarcasm run wild is probably the wrong place to say it, but I was really touched that Real Dan doesn’t want to run Fake Steve while Real Steve is possibly seriously ill. This blog is going really well, I loved Fake Steve and I didn’t think anything could live up to it but this does. I’m also really enjoying looking at the Fake Steve archives. On ‘Things I Read’, I used to like Andrew Sullivan’s blog, but I ended up thinking he’s a real phony, a real posturing opportunistic pseudo-intellectual and pathetic fan of Barry. Please give him some stick on this site. My last attempt to post a comment failed. I hope this gets through. Thanks for everything Real Dan, Namaste

I have to admit I had my doubts about Real Dan but once I started reading I found that he is just as funny as Fake Steve. The only difference is that we aren’t hearing about Moshe and Katie and the Apple Gang. I was also really happy to find out that there is still hope for Fake Steve.

FBO  //  July 24th, 2008 at 10:48 pm

Crap, I forgot about Moshe. I guess this means he’s out of a job now? Hmmm, well, he just kinda laid around when he was with me, so Michelle really doesn’t want him. Maybe I can just make him head of the CIA once I’m President, as long as he doesn’t come here.

Trust me, I am not out of a job. Newsweek has deep pockets.

Dan,

blog is great (already!) and videos are a treat. A chance to put a voice to a voice of FakeSteve once for all :)

Wish you could zoom in on Kevin Johnson’s dancing. From afar, he seems to have about the same holes in dancing moves as Boris Yeltsin. And they both crashed the new platform, if you know what I mean.

I enjoyed the interviews and I’d like to see FSJ reprise particularly to comment on Tech related matters. An idea for the “limited scope of Steve Jobs interests” problem – refer in the FSJ Blog to other Fakes who would be more interested and informed in the matter at hand, which is a logical extension of the “FSJ Guest Blogger” but doesn’t “pollute” FSJ for those who aren’t interested. I’d like to see a Fake George Bush but I doubt it’d be incisive or intrinsically interesting enough. The beauty of FSJ is the dichotomy between his apparent arrogance and self opinion and the public face he needs to present. That gap is where imagination thrives. It doesn’t need to be someone arrogant and wunderkind-ish – it could be someone saintly or bumbling or suave. The Pope or the Dalia Llama would be great, though religion isn’t one of your favourite areas of comment. And the voice would need to be convincingly different. But given FSJs love of filthy hacks, what about a Fake journalist, like Fake Dan Lyons?

Anyone who says RDL has lost anything off his fast ball in the post-FSJ era is four-star frigtarded. The blog is killer and as you can see in the videos, he’s a super cool dude who takes app recommendations from idiots with web-interview sites.

Dan Lyons: Keepin’ it Real.

For the new iPhone, check out “Bejeweled 2″. But do not let the kids see it.

Cheers

Dan, I wish you the best on the RealDan persona, but I guess like some others in the fan club I think your best writing is behind a mask. It’s really tough for any creative person to have confidence in ones own voice. And what worked so well in the FSJ persona was the world of real and fake people that you brilliantly satirised. Anyone that can write the line in Options: “you’re like Willy fookin Wonka in his fookin chocolate factory, out there baking up your fookin iPods” is a genius of Galton/Simpson, or maybe Chabon-esque proportions!

What’s so interesting about your FSJ project is the amount of feedback you get – which I suppose must influence you like few writers have in the past. Does this make you a true 21st century writer? Mind you, some of the negative comments you got when the FSJ was closing I thought were genuinely scary. And of course, totally unfair – it’s not like they paid you!

I’ve updated my bookmarks and will once again be checking in a few times a day to waste some time. I really wish I could write as well as you.

FBO  //  July 25th, 2008 at 8:18 am

The videos where really good. I loved it when you walked off camera, you’re talking in the background, and the guy is just sitting there, it was great. Then you and the other guy just start comparing apps, and downloading apps. Great.

But yeah, I don’t know how you could do a humorous dying article for Fake Steve. But there are options afterwords, Angel Fake Steve, Zombie Fake Steve. Zombie Fake Steve would probably be okay. He could go visit the Borg and eat Ballmer and comment on how sweaty he tasted.

Or, since you said there is the possibility of a return, maybe transfer FSJ to print in Newsweek. Then, we all have to buy copies whenever it comes out. Because lets face it, the only time I read that is the doctor’s office, or somebody leaves it on the plane. Or if I’m really desperate, I’ll buy it in the airport prior to my flight, that is if I didn’t bring my copy of Options with me. I do believe the only bought it once, I think I was on the cover.

talkingheadtv.com is not opening for me :(

“Address Not Found
Firefox can’t find the server at http://www.talkingheadtv.com.”

Anyone else having this problem? I really want to see the video.

Kev  //  July 25th, 2008 at 10:42 am

@Bassem B – yep, broken here as well :(

Any alternate streams?

Chris  //  July 25th, 2008 at 11:15 am

Printing FSJ in Newsweek is the only way that rag will increase it’s readers.

Fess up sparky, that was part of the deal of newsweek hiring you?!?!?

You’re simply not funny as yourself and come across as a bored, lonely and bitter liberal.

FBO  //  July 25th, 2008 at 11:40 am

We liberals like to stick together. Yup, us, and the Obamacans.

What tards. I get a fatal error message for the second of the 4 vids (which aren’t exactly ordered in an easy to find way!):

>>>
Warning: require(/home/itrihar8/talkingheadtv/wp-includes/compat.php) [function.require]: failed to open stream: Cannot allocate memory in /home/itrihar8/talkingheadtv/wp-settings.php on line 202

>>>Fatal error: require() [function.require]: Failed opening required ‘/home/itrihar8/talkingheadtv/wp-includes/compat.php’ (include_path=’.:/usr/lib/php:/usr/local/lib/php’) in /home/itrihar8/talkingheadtv/wp-settings.php on line 202

So Real Dan Lyons — will this be like Batman doing a blog as Bruce Wayne?

And check out that WordPress for iPhone!

RDL -

Seems I got the edited version of the talking head interview.

WHY did FSJ have to go? Does Forbes own it, or something?

I like your style – which is just like (obviously) FSJ’s – keep it up man.

Your “Art Director” on sabbatical,

J

Mike Cane  //  July 26th, 2008 at 10:17 am

Jason: The eejits sliced the video into parts that are not Apple-easy to find. FSJ is taking a break to see if RSJ is going to be OK, health-wise. FSJ might return in the Fall. Unless, you know, RSJ drops dead. (But I do like that Zombie Fake Steve Jobs idea someone put forth…)

According to Daring Fireball: “I’m sure it had nothing to do with the fact that continuing the Fake Steve blog might have an adverse effect on the amount of access to new products Apple will grant to Lyons and Newsweek.”

It’s a bit unusual for Gruber to make unsubstantiated and bitchy claims, so who knows what’s real / what’s fake now?
